Our second round of chickens hatched just a few weeks ago and they are growing by the day! This round we incubated 16 eggs, 10 hatched and 2 chicks unfortunately died of unclear reasons. So we currently have a young flock of 8 chicks; 3 Rhode Island red, 3 Barred Rock and 2 Blue Orpington chicks.

We have the brooder set up in the house and these little birds are quickly outgrowing their current quarters! During they day our chicks are free to roam about the yard and eat every mosquito they can find, which they diligently work on. At night they are safely back in the brooder in our home. We just give them fresh food, water and a warm safe place to be!

I have seen our future chicken predator lurking around the farm already, a fox. We have seen this fox twice recently and I know we need to make a secure coop to keep them safe because, nearly everyone, loves a chicken. The chicken coop is being built by a local farmer who also sells chicks, Jersey Chickens.

We have been feeding the chickens primarily this organic chicken feed from amazon. Happy to say there have been no pasty butt incidences with this type of feed. They had some of the remaining food from our first chicks and they also are eating whatever they find in the backyard!

Our daughter has been loving being a little mother hen to her chicks and has affectionately named all the chickens, Luna, named after an owl at a local animal shelter.
