Planting Over 400,000 Sunflower Seeds

Putting this many seeds in the ground was a project for us, and one of the most hopeful things my husband and I have ever done together.

Sunflower Seeds

We bought our seeds from two companies. We purchased around 30,000 seeds from Harris Seeds. We purchased three different pro-cut types that are one stem per seed and so excited to see how they turn out! We also purchased a beautiful variety of seeds from a wonderful company called Eden Brothers. Eden Brothers has excellent customer service and clearly wants each customer to have what they need.

Sunflower Seeder

We found a sunflower seeder through a local tractor company knowing we wouldn’t be able to plant all these seeds by hand. We bought a Cole Seeder which cost around $4,000. While it wasn’t the most intuitive machine, we could not have done this without it! After some helpful youtube videos, all the seeds are dispersed in the field!

To Till or to Direct Seed Sunflower Seeds

We did attempt to direct seed the sunflower seeds, however, with the machinery we had mixed with our inexperience, it wasn’t going to happen. So we rented a tiller to loosen the soil and it helped the seeder get going!

After the field was tilled, Mark started planting the sunflower seeds.

The Sunflower Plan

So we tilled, seeded and now, we watch and wait! The seeds should take between 50-60 days to get to harvest and our last frost is middle of October, so there should be plenty of time for growth. Our plan is to have a Sunflower Festival in September for the community so everyone can enjoy the flowers.

Very nice plowing skills! Do you have to water the seeds?

    1. Thank you! So far we have not watered them because we have thankfully had rain! If it gets really dry we will turn on a large sprinkler!

  2. Can you explain what the prices are associated with picking sunflowers at your farm please?

    1. Hi Patricia! We are charging $2 per stem! When you purchase more stems you get additional stems! 6 Stems for $10, 13 Stems for $20! Hope to see you there!
