This past May our family of three took some time and visited peaceful Kiawah Island, SC which is right outside of Charleston. This was actually our second time staying there, our first visit took a turn for the worst when our family got sick. Thankfully this year we were able to explore more and enjoy the island!

Where to Eat and Stay!

I found the best option for our family was to rent an airbnb on the island. We found a sweet home that had three bedrooms and two bathrooms, family room and kitchen. Our rental also gave us access to a pool which was super close to the house and such a fun addition to the stay! Last year we stayed in a condo on the beach which was had a deck overlooking the ocean. This place had two bedrooms and two bathrooms, we loved this rental and the beach access!

On our way into Kiawah we stopped at a fun restaurant on the water in Charleston called Fleet Landing. We were able to sit outside and enjoy the view! Other restaurants close to our rentals were in the Freshfields Village.

What to do on the island!

We rented bicycles which was such a positive for us! We rode our bikes to the local shopping area right off the island called Freshfields Village. We also rode our bikes to the pool and beach, explored the island and to the convenience store on the island! The bike rental company delivers the bikes and I thought it make the cost a little bit more expensive, but it was still worth it for us. We used the Seaside Cycles company which delivered them very quickly! It may make more sense to order the bikes before you go, since they really rent them per night in a way. Since it’s delivery there is a different routine from what I’ve experienced with other bike rental companies. Even with the cost for a few days, we found them to be so fun, practical and keeps you outside as opposed to hopping back in the car!

Other sites to see!

We took a day trip to a plantation outside of Charleston that was such a unique experience! We decided to go see Boone Hall Plantation. There are several different plantations you can visit and there are certainly others that are beautiful! This one had a wonderful wagon ride around the property, a butterfly garden, a house tour of the lower level and horses. There was a lot of history on the plantation with slave houses outside of the main home and tour guides explaining the history. The house tour guide and wagon ride tour guide also mentioned movies that had been filmed at the plantation such as The Notebook.

Our family was looking for a laid back time away with swimming, bike rides, beaches and some places to eat together! It was a wonderful place to visit with lots of nearby activities mixed with staying nearby our rental and enjoying time as a family!
